Volvo Construction Equipment (), a rental equipment leader in the USA, partnered with HUSS, LLC, in 2008 with the goal of providing retrofit systems for Volvo construction equipment that will significantly reduce exhaust emissions.
With final approval in California now a thing of the past, the Huss MK system can now be installed on Volvo’s Tier 3 IEGR (internal exhaust gas recirculation) equipped machines through-out the state of . Capable of collecting up to 99% of diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions, this new diesel system substantially exceeds the California CARB 3+requirements.
Volvo Rents equipment owners can now utilize this advanced system to help in complying with the “In-Use Off-Road Diesel Vehicle Regulation”, while providing the best available control technology (BACT) for the newest machines in their fleets. In the past, engines utilizing EGR had been excluded from applying for exhaust retrofit technology in California. This has now changed with this recent system verification by the state of .
The retrofit system has been equipped with a HUSS Control Unit. The Huss Control Unit constantly monitors filter function to control diesel PM loading and regeneration. This is an active filter regeneration system, accomplished through an integrated fuel burner system. Regeneration typically takes place after approximately 8 to 10 operating hours and is completed during breaks or shift change in 5 to 35 minutes with no external support needed leading to a cleaner environment and substantial cost savings.
In addition to the reduction of 99% PM, there is no increase of NO2 or other secondary emissions. The HUSS technology is adaptable up to 700 hp providing reliable installations for both rubber and tracked machines. With the active system, there is no need to be concerned with exhaust temperature profiles, changing duty cycles, ULSD fuel, stocking extra filters or incur undue downtime swapping filters due to the clogging and cleaning cycle of misapplied passive systems.
The Volvo/HUSS emissions reduction retrofit system may be installed on all Volvo equipment in California. In addition to bettering the environment, customers using the system may be able to save thousands of dollars by avoiding the costly process of total engine replacement. They may also be state and federal grants and incentives available, by meeting current emission requirements. By retrofitting this state of the art diesel engine system, funding may be available as well as double emission credits, in some areas for Volvo Rents.
