SMS Rents in Mississauga, Ontario recently took part in a program to train high school students, from Meadowvale Secondary School, trade skills at a large construction project. SMS Rents involvement with the training was to teach the students how to safely use an aerial lift.
Meadowvale Secondary Schools’ Construction Program gives high school students an alternative to standard high school programs. In all, seventeen students were able to gain trade skills while working on a major renovation for Cairn Control Systems. The project involves turning a 3000 sq.ft warehouse into offices, reception, and stockroom areas.
Through the program, students learned the proper use of tools and equipment, and construction skills such as framing, drywalling, installing doors and windows, and installation of electrical lines and plumbing.
An SMS Rents store employee spent the day with the students providing them with classroom instruction, and the rental company’s five part training program, giving the students hands on experience using a Skyjack scissor lift. At the end of the training the students were given workplace certification in aerial lift safety and operation.
Once the project is complete the students involved will have earned credits toward their high school diploma, as well as a valid lift operator’s certificate. These will be valuable skills they will be able to put on their resume in the future.
