Home decor, and interior design trends constantly give us a new set of looks for our home each year, and 2012 is no different. Yet if you’re living in a rental property, you can’t go changing the paint on the walls, put up wallpaper, or give your home a whole new kitchen reno to match the current trends. And even if you are a home-owner, you likely don’t have the money, or time, to invest in constantly updating your home’s interior as often as the trends change.
But for many people interior decorating is a passion. If you love the new home decor trends that you see online, in magazines, and on TV, and find yourself wanting an update, here are some affordable ideas that anyone can incorporate.
Buy a new area rug. An area rug is a great focal point for a rooms’ floor, and it adds comfort. If you love to change things up, you might want to consider a soft, plush rug for winter, and a more casual rug for summer. Navajo rugs are the trend for 2012, and add a bright, yet earthy touch of western style to your room.
Invest in a new accent piece of furniture, or paint your old furniture. Perhaps you can’t buy all new couches, and dining room furniture, but by re-claiming an old piece of furniture with a fresh coat of paint, you can add a new focal point to a room. There are lots of great websites out there with painting ideas and techniques you can try. Garage sales, thrifts stores, and antique stores may have a hidden gem just waiting to be fixed up.
For 2012 the weathered look is popular, as is a marbleized look. Both can be achieved with some creative paint techniques, and make a fun project.
Change your wall decor. Hang some new pictures on the walls, or invest in some new frames for your favorite artwork. Other ideas to adorn your walls, and create interest, include hanging a collection of vintage plates, or colorful plates, tiles, or a collection of items.
For 2012 big floral prints are in. Try an extra large floral photograph, or print on the wall.
The Industrial look is also popular. If you like that look, try hanging a collection of industrial parts on the wall.
Colorful fabrics- Change a room’s look, and incorporate the latest color trends with fabric. Purchase a few new cushions, a table runner or place-mats, or new bedding with a splash of the latest color. If you’re handy with a sewing machine you can sew your own cushion covers, duvet cover, and plenty of other projects for your home.
For 2012 dyed linens are popular, as well as watercolors, large florals, yellows, pinks, lilac accented with a light green, bold colors, and 70’s upholstry.
Curtains-curtains and window treatments are another great way to refresh a room. Buy some in this year’s popular colors, or check out the wide selection of fabrics available, and get creative and make your own. (Then they’ll be the exact size you need, too)
Plants-If you have a green thumb (or even if you don’t) plants are a wonderful way to add an interesting feature to your home, and they improve your air quality at the same time. Grow what is interesting, and easy for you, from small potted plants to large indoor trees. This year, Ficus trees are a popular plant that everyone is making a space for in their home.
Changing your home decor by adding new pieces that you enjoy is a fun and affordable way to refresh your look. Creating your own home decor projects, whether they be with fabric, painting furniture, or making new 3-D art, is fun, and satisfies your decorating bug when you can’t paint the walls, or do entire home renovations.
